How do I face Dental Emergencies?

There are several causes for the emergency dental situation. We have patients who visit our office with a tooth which got knocked out during adventure sports, patients who are suffering from pain from tooth decay, broken braces and in some cases fallen fillings. These dental emergencies often cause pain to teeth or surrounding soft tissues and may require some immediate home care steps to alleviate pain.

Toothache

There can be several causes for a toothache. Swelling and pain can disturb a person’s daily routine. Patients should firstly rinse their mouth with warm water and floss to remove any remaining food particles. A cold compress can help reduce swelling. An over the counter pain medicine may reduce pain but it is important to visit our emergency dentist at the earliest to protect the tooth. The decayed portion of the tooth is removed and appropriate treatment is performed to restore/protect the tooth.

Knocked out Tooth

A tooth which is knocked out during an accident can be put back to place within one hour of the incident. The patient should first hold the tooth by the crown and gently wash off any dust particles. The root of the tooth should not be disturbed. The tooth can be preserved in a container of milk or in the vestibule of the patient. The patient should rush to our Emergency Dentist Dr. Awwad as early as possible.

Chipped Tooth

A tooth that is chipped accidentally can be very painful. The patient should rinse the mouth with warm water and collect the remaining pieces of the chipped tooth. Our dentist can restore the tooth with appropriate materials during the emergency dental visit. If the tooth is broken into two pieces, the pieces can be bonded together and capped with a crown if found necessary.

Fallen Dental Filling

A fallen tooth filling can cause tooth sensitivity and can sometimes be painful. Patients should meet with us at the earliest to replace the fallen filling with appropriate restorative materials.

Broken Dental Braces

When the wires of dental braces are broken and sticking out, they may cause pain to the lips, cheek and the gums. Patients can try and put back the wire into the bracket into a position where it doesn’t poke the interior of the mouth. If you are unable to put the wire in a comfortable position, you can cover it with cotton to reduce pain.
